Le site cyberstratege.com publie un premier test de Civilization IV: Colonization (test effectué sur une version beta):

"Colonization fait partie des jeux de stratégie mythiques des années 90. Il est resté une solide référence malgré le temps passé. Rien de surprenant à ce que Firaxis en publie une nouvelle version en 2008…
A défaut d’un véritable Colonization II."

Le verdict est plutôt positif dans l'ensemble (note 7/10), mais selon l'auteur du test le jeu manque d'innovations.
